| 3. What is a Rom? In short, emulation is the act of playing another system's games on your home computer or console. 2. Ok ok, but what is an Emulator? An emulator is the program which mimics the other system. These emulators usually work like this: they translate or interpret the original program code of the original game and make it work on your PC. The games/demos/programs are usually stored in a Rom file. 3. Hm, now.. what is an Rom? Most classic games are stored on cartridges (example: NES, Super Nintendo etc.). On those cartridges are special computer chips called ROM chips (Read Only Memory). Interfacing such a cartridge with the PC is not very easy so people have invented devices which can download the contents of such a Rom chip (the game software and data files) to a special file: a Rom file. 6. How do I run an Emulator? The best place to start if you are new to Emulators or you are having trouble running one, is to read the emulators Read me file which should come with most emulators. 7. Whats MAME32? In computer games, MAME is an acronym for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. According to the official MAME website (http://www.mame.net), the first official MAME release (0.1) was released on February 5 1997 by Nicola Salmoria. MAME tries to faithfully emulate as many different arcade machines and games as possible, and has been ported to many different platforms. The X11 port for UNIX-like systems is called XMAME. 8. How do I install the MAME32? Double-click the self-extracting archive .exe, and point the directory install location to the root of the c:\ drive, or just type in the box "c:\" [no quotes]. This will create a c:\mame32 directory with the program and all its support files within it. I just install it in My documents so I know where its at for installing more ROMs(games). Mame32 requires ROMs to run. Download the freely available public domain ROMs [Robby Roto and Gridlee] from Mame.net. Place these files still zipped, into the \mame32\ROMs folder. Do not unzip them. Some early games require sampled sounds [Space Invaders, Donkey Kong, etc.] due to their sound hardware, these are available at Mame.net. If a game requires samples it will show on the game's property tab [alt-enter]. Place the sample files as zip files into the \mame32\samples folder. Do not unzip them. Double-click the Mame32 icon to launch the program. Mame32 will go through its initial diagnostics and search for available games in the c:\mame32\ROMs directory, and then display the GUI. |
